The .arw file format
ARW files are RAW image files created by Sony. The raw, uncompressed ARW file are generated (using the TIFF specifications) from Images captured using Sony cameras. These files hold all data captured by the camera’s CCD. By using editing software availed by ARW the user can modify the photo before exporting to compressed image files such as JPG, GIF, or PNG. Users can see the images in the TIFF/RAW image style using the numerous ARW viewers which are available, though sending and receiving ARW or any other RAW images is not quite as simple.

Not all image-editing software related to Sony will work owing to the differences found between different ARW files (which arise due to the CCD specification of the camera in use). The need to convert is due to the fact that ARW files can pick up elements not usable by image viewers, which complicate uploading or sending images via the internet. Conversion may be done automatically when moving images from the camera to a computer, but if not, online file conversion may be needed.
